A Guide to Using Masonry Paints

Using masonry paint is an effective way to refresh and protect exterior surfaces, such as brick, concrete, or stucco walls. Here is our step-by-step guide on how to properly use masonry paint.

Step 1: Surface Preparation

Clean the surface you are going to paint thoroughly to remove any dirt, dust, grease, or loose debris. Use a wire brush or power washer for tougher stains or accumulated grime. Repair any cracks or damaged areas with suitable masonry repair products and allow them to dry completely.

Step 2: Primer Application

Apply a primer specifically such as designed for masonry surfaces such as Crown Alkali Resisting Sealer Primer Paint. This product allows paint to more effectively adhere to the masonry surface, as well as increase durability and colour consistency. Use a paintbrush or roller to evenly apply the primer, following the manufacturer's instructions. Allow the primer to dry completely before proceeding.

Step 3: Painting

Choosing a high-quality masonry paint that is fit for purpose is paramount to this next step. Crown Paints provides two paints that are highly durable with a long-lasting finish in a variety of colours. Firstly there is Crown Stronghold Smooth Masonry Paint that has 10 years proven durability and is anti-carbonation certified. Secondly there is Crown Textured Masonry Paint. This paint is more durable than most as it contains rock aggregate to ensure maximum weather protection and has a proven durability of 15 years. Both come in a variety of vibrant and stylish colours.

To apply the paint start by stirring the paint thoroughly to ensure proper consistency. Use a paintbrush or roller, depending on the surface area and texture. Begin with the edges and corners using a brush, and then move on to larger areas with a roller for a smooth and even application. Apply the paint in thin, even coats, working from top to bottom. Avoid overloading the brush or roller, as this can result in drips or uneven coverage.

Step 4: Drying and Additional Coats:

Allow the first coat to dry completely according to the paint manufacturer's instructions. This typically takes a few hours. If necessary, apply additional coats for better coverage and colour intensity. Make sure each coat is thoroughly dry before applying the next.

Remember to follow safety guidelines and use appropriate protective gear, such as gloves and goggles, when working with masonry paint. Also, ensure proper ventilation during the painting process. By following these steps, you can effectively use masonry paint to enhance and protect the exterior surfaces of your home or building, providing a fresh and durable finish that withstands the test of time.
