Painting over ceramic tiles

Conventional tiles are ineffective when painting on unprimed ceramic tiles. Our step by step guide explains how to prime and finish tiles using Zinsser products.

Steps

  1. Surface Preparation

Using Zinsser Mould Killer & Remover in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions, will treat the area and remove any visible signs or organic growth. Allow to dry.

Wash the surface down with hot water and liquid detergent to ensure that the surface is free from any contaminants and anything that could interfere with the adhesion. Frequently change the water and then degrease overall with methylated spirit, frequently changing the cloth.

Ensure that all the grout is fully dry before overcoating.

  1. Priming

Using Zinsser Bulls Eye 1-2-3 Primer in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions, prime all bare ceramic tiles with one full coat. Allow 1 hour minimum drying time in normal drying conditions.

  1. Decoration

Finally for interior projects, decorate with 2 full coats of Zinsser Perma-White Interior Matt or Zinsser Perma-White Interior Satin in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions. For exterior projects apply 2 full coats of  Zinsser AllCoat Exterior Gloss or Zinsser AllCoat Exterior Satin in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions. Allow 1 hour drying time between coats.
