Trade vs Retail Paint

Paint is more than just the colour and finish. There are so many elements that make a paint unique, practical, and efficient. Dulux, Crown, Tikkurila, etc all make paints for different purposes and for different methods of application whether it be traditional roller and brush or a seamless spraying machine, but what is the real difference between trade and retail paint?

As a rule, retail paints require more coats and often provide less coverage for the same amount of paint, but why? The amount of pigment in trade paints is much higher and the paint comes at a viscosity (thickness) that is ready to be applied straight from the tin. For a person in the trade, it is in their best interest to use a product that will require less work to get a high-quality result so a product which provides this to them is a necessity.

Other differences between trade and retail go further than just the viscosity of the paint. Trade paints cover better, even after thinning meaning less coats. Trade paints have a higher spreading rate than retail – this saves money. Trade paints are available in larger pack sizes – making it more economical. Trade paints are consistently tested to make sure they reach the high standards of professional users and their customers. Trade paint also offer specific products for specific jobs so that you can use the best materials for the job.
