Commercial Office Manager

I applied for a data input position with Kent Blaxill back in 2005, it was just before Christmas as I wanted something that was close to home and part-time. I had a background in the building industry but prior to having my son, I felt I would enjoy working for a smaller company who had a good name within the town.

The role I applied for was in the product management department which is a great place to work, varied, interesting and challenging. I have studied and attained two NVQ's with the support and encouragement of the Company and my manager.

On-the-job training provided by my manager was second to none and he encouraged me to take more of a lead role within the department. I have been here for over 16 years now and have worked my way upto Commerical Office Manager - not bad for a woman in a so called male industry! I love the challenges my role brings and I'm really proud to work for an ever growing and evolving Independent Merchant, the variation of products and people means there is always something new to learn and someone new to meet. Product Manager - Decorative

I joined Kent Blaxill in 2013 as a Business Development Manager on the decorative side of the business. My previous experience was in plumbing, so learning about the paint industry was a big change, but really interesting. My manager was very supportive and I was given lots of training and opportunities to learn.

Whilst in this position I completed an ILM qualification and the company’s ‘rising stars’ programme where I helped train other team members in sales and margin. I was given great support and learnt a lot throughout.

I was also lucky enough to represent Kent Blaxill at the ‘BMF Master Merchant Competition’ in the lake district. This involved meeting lots of other teams from merchants all over the country and competing in activities like kayaking and climbing.  It was a fantastic experience that I will always treasure.

In 2020 I moved from sales to my current role as Product Manager.  After almost 20 years’ experience in sales, purchasing felt like a natural progression.  I really enjoy working within the head office team and with the wider decorative network. I love my job and all the various parts that keep me busy!  Most of all I love the people, branch teams, head office and suppliers, it’s the people that really make it for me!

I continue to receive training and support and feel really valued and respected by my colleagues and the management team. KB’s is a lovely place to work, you are treated as a person, not just a number!

I started at KB’s after applying for a trainee glazier in 2013 with no experience in the industry and no clear idea of what I wanted to do as a career. During my 4 years in the glass department I received training through courses and colleague training until I was able to run jobs and have my own van. In 2017 I was offered the chance to take part in a training course called find the leader in you, to develop skills with the view to move into a management/leadership role.

I completed the yearlong training programme and from there it has helped me achieve various roles, from supervisor to shop manager, then branch manager in a small branch, and now in a larger branch. I wouldn’t have ever pursued a career as a branch manager, but through the support of colleagues, line managers and the senior management team I’ve found a career path that I have really enjoyed and I am very passionate about.

I am very grateful I’ve had the chance to develop myself within a company who have been nothing but supportive. I am now in a position where I can do the same for my team and look for every opportunity to promote development of the branch and individuals and that is the most rewarding part. I would recommend the industry to anyone looking for a challenge, with experience or not, as there are so many different types of roles there and something for everyone.
