Primers and undercoats are a vital step in the painting process. If you are painting a new surface, it is recommended to use a primer. However, if the surface has been painted previously, an undercoat is recommended.
Undercoats are used to gain good adhesion, and offer a smooth and uniform colour for topcoats. These cover surface imperfections and are commonly sanded before re-coating. Undercoat paint will allow topcoats to achieve a better finish and depth of colour.
If you require an undercoat for your project, both the Dulux Trade White Undercoat and the Armstead Trade Acrylic Wood Primer Undercoat Paint will be good choices. These create a resistant barrier to moisture and form the ideal base for a top coat.
Primer paint is the name given to the base coat or first coat applied to a surface. Priming the substrate will form a good foundation for the top coat of paint. There is a vast range of primers to suit different surfaces and environments, from wood primers and metal primers to red oxide primer and acrylic primers.
Some popular primers include the Zinsser Bin Primer, which is a primer, sealer and stain killer in one and offers great adhesion to any surface without sanding; and the Little Greene Intelligent All Surface Primer Paint that provides a matt coating for both interior and exterior surfaces.
